Introduction

October has been a very interesting month for Holomento. I took some much needed personal time off and went on a short vacation. When I wasn’t taking a break, I managed to squeeze in some new features and finally got around to releasing Alpha 0.3! This month’s devlog will be rather short as a lot of features I added and bugs I fixed can’t be easily shown through gifs. However, I managed to add some great new items and features and I hope you enjoy the devlog despite its brevity.

Last month I started featuring patrons in the devlogs as a part of patron rewards. If you would like to become a patron, please visit the project’s Patreon. I’d like to extend an ENORMOUS thank you to Holomento’s patrons below:

Dock Town Expansion

The (still unnamed) Dock town has seen some expansion this month as I work to build out more of the world. Eventually, I will add lower tier versions of this town that will require the player to build the area up from scratch. However, I am starting with the fully upgraded version to get a feeling for what the town may be like when it’s complete. There is still a ways to go but I think the town is starting to take shape!

Combat Changes

As always, there have been plenty of tweaks to the enemies, bosses and combat in general this month. One change that can be seen in the gif below is a slow-motion effect that is applied whenever the player takes heavy damage or is knocked down. This is one of several ways I am working towards giving combat more “weight”.

Wings Item Type

Throughout the month of October, I took some time to add a number of items to the game. Most noteably though are an entirely new item type: wings. Sadly, the wings that the player can equip do not give the ability to fly as that would break several elements of the game. However, they can give a number of powerful buffs including increased movement speed most noteably. In the gifs below you can see some of the early animations for attacks and transitions for the wings.

Other New Items

In addition to the new wings, I spent some time adding a few other items with a bit of a Halloween theme. These items include a number of candle pickups that create a particle system of candles that floats around the player, a pumpkin head helmet and a few Halloween themed weapons (not shown).

Consumables Rework

One of the biggest changes in October was a complete consumables system overhaul. Instead of a slot-based system, I changed consumables to use a radial menu that can carry an unlimited number of items of a given type. This change will allow me to add a number of systems that are related to consumables in the near future. Some planned additions are bartering to sell consumables, enemy consumable drops and (maybe) harvestable consumables off of trees, bushes and farms. I’m excited about the potential this new consumables system has.

Cathedral (Early WIP Area)

The last thing I’ve been working on this past month is a new dungeon-like area. The cathedral is an area heavily inspired by the Dark Souls series and (in my opinion) shows it well. In its early stages it contains an eerie graveyard and open interior which will eventually contain a boss arena and a connection to the underground.

Wrap-Up

Alright, that’s all for this month. Don’t forget the Holomento Alpha is live so updates will be frequently posted to the Steam Community page. This Dev Log will continue but does not guarantee the latest information. If you would like to keep up with the latest updates on the project I invite you to follow progress via the links below:

See you all next month!
